Alumni Event Ideas for the Fall

medium_10985425436There’s no doubting that most alumni have a serious sense of pride for their respective alma maters nationwide. With fall marking the beginning of another school year and a much anticipated football season, this is the prime time to invite alumni back to your university. Show that your love for alumni remains true beyond graduation by including them in fun events that will both strengthen relationships and raise funds. Below are a few fun alumni event ideas for the fall that your alumni will love.

Museum or gallery cocktail hour - Have a semiformal event at a local museum or gallery the Friday night prior to a home game in your community. This event will most likely attract older alumni who have fewer excuses to get fancy with the wedding seasons of their lives behind them. A night out on the town in honor of your alma mater is not only appealing but a great way to raise funds.

Barbecue and brews tailgate – Depending on the weather, either have this tailgate outside under tents or in the alumni center. No one likes to deal with grueling heat, so your best bet would be to have it indoors if the weather is uncomfortable. Have a local barbecue joint cater and provide drinks for this exclusive event to keep alumni comfortable and somewhat removed from the chaos that often exists on gameday.

Sunday brunch - With lots of alumni in town for football weekends, what better way to get them rejuvenated and ready to head back to their respective homes than with a scrumptious brunch? Rent out a locals' favorite brunch place (chances are they’ll have been there during college) or host it in the alumni center as a cheaper alternative. Try out this event and see if it finds success—if so consider starting a Sunday breakfast club for alumni proceeding every home game weekend.

Away game watch party - Get alumni coming to your community on weekends when the home team isn’t in town. Chances are it’s easier for them to travel to your respective town than to the away game, so invite them to come to an exclusive watch party at a downtown rooftop, local restaurant or your university hotel to cheer on their team with others who care just as much as they do.

Athletic Alumni events – Cater to those alumni who lead an active lifestyle by holding a student fitness instructor led fun run or sunrise yoga class on gameday. This is a great way for alumni to take in the beauty and peace of campus before students have rolled out of bed for the day’s festivities.

Alumni that feel included in the community they once called home are proven to donate more on average to their university than those that do not. Foster and maintain relationships with those who once called your higher ed institution home by considering any of the alumni event ideas above.
