Instagram may have started as a way for trendy people to share pictures with their friends, but it has quickly become a popular outlet for businesses to connect with their customers. As great as that sounds, building a follower base on Instagram can be difficult for businesses considering it is a newer social media platform, and it has a fairly specific user base. One great way to gain followers is through Instagram contests and giveaways. Here are a few companies who used Instagram contests to get more followers and increase business.
Dunkin’ Donuts held a contest during Halloween encouraging customers to decorate their cups and post pictures on Instagram using the hashtag #DresseDD. The five best-costumed cups won $100 DD gift cards, and the contest was just as successful for Dunkin’ Donuts. In just a few weeks, the amount of Dunkin’ Donuts content on Instagram nearly doubled, and they gained numerous new followers.
Heineken took a different approach to their Instagram contest. Rather than ask their followers to post pictures, they created an Instagram scavenger hunt where followers had a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Men’s U.S. open finals. Heineken challenged their followers to find clues in a mosaic of photos on their @crack_the_us_open Instagram page. Each correct photo led followers to the next clue, and they used the codeword #SHH to comment on each picture until they got to the last one. The contest included nine different challenges, and the first person to win each challenge won a pair of tickets. More than 1,500 people participated, and Heineken’s followers increased by 20 percent.
Ford’s contest may take the cake for best prize. Their “Fiestagram” campaign was a six-week long photo contest where users were encouraged to post pictures that related to the weekly Ford themed hashtags. The hashtags promoted the Fiesta’s high-tech features like #entry, #music and #fashion, and the winners won brand new Ford Fiestas. Talk about a big reward for a simple task. During the six weeks, more than 16,000 pictures were taken, Ford gained 120,000 new Facebook fans, and they gained the attention of their intended target audience – fashion, style and tech-savvy young people.
It’s no secret that people (especially us millennials) love free stuff. With platforms like Instagram and Facebook, it’s easier than ever for your business to hold contests and giveaways. They’re a great way to create brand awareness or establish a better relationship with your customers. So, get to ‘grammin.
