Engaging Alumni Through Pinterest

Posted by Katie FitzGerald on Nov 20, 2013 5:18:54 AM

Pinterest accounts for over 48.7 million users and in just three years it has grown to be one of the biggest social media networks on the planet. With the average user age being between 25-34 this huge social network is a perfect place to engage your school’s recent alumni. The best ways to garner alumni support and attention through Pinterest is to showcase famous alumni, show where your graduates go on to work and how your alumni show their school pride.

Showcasing your most famous and notable alumni is a great way to show prospective students whose footsteps they’ll be following in as well as showing alumni where their fellow graduates have gone. Making a visual pin board that showcases the accomplishments of the notable alumni and links to articles and news about their achievements is the best way to show off these campus celebs. Oberlin College has a pin-board titled “Oberachievments” which shows their students and alums how are doing truly great things.

Showing the companies where alumni go on to work and how they show their school pride in the office is another great way to get alumni support. Alumni love showing off their alma mater and their school pride. Simply ask your alumni to share how they’re demonstrating their pride in the office either on Facebook or twitter and put the results up on a Pinterest board. Another great idea to get alumni to show off their pride is to have them reflect on what makes them proud of their university. Drake University has a pin board called “Drake Alumni: Pin Your Pride” and encourages their alum to pin what things make them remember their university and reminds them of their time in college. The pin board is full of bulldogs (the campus mascot) and pictures of the campus.

Pinterest is a great way to garner alumni attention and support for you college or university. Alumni love to show off their pride and see who of their former classmates has hit it big and incorporating both onto your Pinterest page is a surefire way to get and keep your alumni involved.
