Lessons Learned from MacGyver

Posted by Don Crow on Aug 30, 2011 4:00:43 AM

If you aren't familiar with the hit TV series MaGyver, brush up via this Wikipedia article. If you don't, it is very likely this post won't make sense. But for those of you needing a refresher, the relationship between this post and MacGyver is that he was, "resourceful agent able to solve complex problems with everyday materials he finds at hand, along with his ever-present duct tape and Swiss Army Knife."

With one all important made for TV caveat: the problems he solved, with the solutions he developed worked, but the producers left out one important step or ingredient, lest some enterprising viewer try the trick at home and seriously injure themselves or others.

Now what does that have to do with Social Media, Mobile, Marketing and the Web?

Simple, you are a person who peddles your wares in the aforementioned arena for your sole proprietorship or small to medium sized business. OR, let's face it, you are peddling any wares via social media, mobile and the web.....

Start showing and sharing MORE content that is solution based - and leave out that important step that ties it all together - and STOP just broadcasting what you do. By now you know our philosophy here is simple: people are ditching traditional ad mediums in droves in favor of the digital world. In order to find your own digital voice, you've got to have a different pitch, tone, accent, etc., to be invited in and to start sharing. In the meantime, if you're going to attract digital ears with your digital voice, it has to be content people are hungry for, i.e., solutions to their complex problems.

Enter you as the digital MacGyver with solution based content on your blog, website, facebook page, YouTube channel and others - just hold your secret sauce in reserve. Why? If some low level scrapper takes your content and peddles as their own, they've got to know there is a step missing, provide that step, or risk looking extremely foolish and trashing their reputation in the process. You on the other hand have very likely gained an important follower who is hungry for the missing step and who better to offer that complete solution than you, the original author and sharer of problem solving content.

Sound simple? It is with practice, patience and a plan.

NOTE: The author removed one step from this roadmap to illustrate his point. 8-)
