In this day and age, mobile is the way to go. Most people don’t go a day (I don’t even go an hour) without using their Smartphones. They are our lifelines – vessels to the world around us, and if you’re a small business, you should be taking advantage of that.
One cool way to do this is by utilizing popular apps that your target audience uses. Recently businesses have begun using Snapchat, a wildly popular app for people ages 13 to 25, to market their brand.
Snapchat is an app that allows you to send a picture or video to selected friends for one to 10 seconds. Upon the time ending, the picture or video disappears into the cyber world for eternity. But don’t go thinking you can get away with anything – anyone who you send the picture or video to has the ability to take a screen shot (warning: this capability leads to a lot of embarrassing birthday pictures).
So which businesses are utilizing this app, and how are they doing it?
One great example is Taco Bell. Although you may face hours of regret after eating two Doritos Locos tacos, a cheesy double-beef burrito and a crunch wrap supreme, you can’t say Taco Bell doesn’t have an impressive PR department. Taco Bell hopped on the Snapchat bandwagon by informing their followers on Twitter that they would be sending private snaps to their fans of a burrito they had not yet released to the public. By doing this, Taco Bell made their fans feel like they were on a more personal level, and it also expanded their presence on Snapchat.
16 Handles, a New York-based ice cream chain, carried out another successful Snapchat campaign. They encouraged customers to send a snap of themselves trying one of the company’s 16 flavors. In return, 16 Handles sent the customer a coupon ranging anywhere from 15 to 100 percent off of their purchase. The coupon had to be opened within 10 seconds of their purchase in order for it to be redeemed.
Although it hasn’t really caught on yet, Snapchat is a great tool for connecting with customers. When it comes to social media, people always respond to contests, pictures and coupons. So, if you’re looking for a way to spice up your business, think about using Snapchat for your next contest or promotion, and make sure to add me (username: addithecat) as your friend.
