Using Social Media to Build a Strong Alumni Base & Institution

An alumni relations department aims to keep alumni connected. A strong alumni base that is supportive and committed helps recruit students and build a strong brand awareness. A 2013 survey by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education showed that 97% of U.S. colleges and universities are using social media to engage alumni, and 81% of all campaigns involving social media were focused on alumni engagement. Having a strong base of former students allows alumni associations to emphasize its institution’s brand. Using a social media strategy and making the most of social tools allows the institution to build a strong, sustainable alumni network that benefits the institution in many ways.

Build Lasting Relationships

We can listen to alumni in new ways using social media. A major perk of being a part of the online conversation with alumni and social media is being able to supplement traditional surveys with what people are discussing on social media. Using online conversations as a part of your institutions research eliminates some of the guesswork and allows you to offer more targeted solutions to problems facing your alumni association. It is important to join the conversation online. The key to participating in these existing conversations is to meaningfully engage. When it comes to social media, bombarding alumni with some agenda that you are trying to push is far inferior to the more delicate approach of actually providing useful content. Social media has not only enabled us to share useful content but to also share more alumni success stories than ever before in a quick and creative fashion. Social media allows institutions to join the conversation and meaningfully engage which allows them to build a successful alumni base that will benefit their university for years to come.
