The Importance of a Content Calendar

Posted by Catherine Andrews on Apr 19, 2017 9:00:00 AM

What do all successful companies have in common? Well, they’ve all learned, whether it was the easy way or the hard way, that staying organized and planning ahead is key to their success.  Whether it is planning out your goals on a timeline or creating a filing system for the whole office, all aspects of a business need some form of organization.  This includes running your social media accounts.

Yes, social media can be seen as the more fun and "laid back" piece of a company; however, it is the organization and planning that goes on behind the scenes that keeps it that way.  With so many accounts, and unique philosophies for each one, handling social media can quickly get away from you.  This is where a content calendar can become your saving grace.

 What is a content calendar?

A content calendar is a calendar that’s purpose is to plan out all of the content that will be posted on your social media platforms.  Each day can be planned out in detail so that when it comes time to schedule your social posts, you can simply turn to the calendar to see what should bcontent calendar templatee posted that day on each platform.  With this calendar, you can plan out and visualize your content as far out into the future as you want.  You can also share this calendar between your coworkers so that you will all be on the same page about your social media plans.  Once you are able to plan ahead and visualize, you will be able to understand and show people what your company’s social media voice is.  This may be similar between platforms, or you may have a
different approach for each one.

How will this help me stay organized?

Most companies post on a variety of platforms to ensure that they are reaching all of their potential customers in the way that they desire.  Each of these platforms calls for a different kind of post, whether it is a simple image and caption on Instagram or a longer form post on Facebook.  Each platform is also unique when it comes to how often you should post and at what times.  Because there are so many differences, it is easy to get overwhelmed.  By having each post laid out on a calendar, you can ensure that you will not miss a time slot on any of the platforms.  You will also easily be able to see what content you have already posted and on what platforms.  If you plan to push out content more than once, it is important to know when it was posted so that you can plan the next post accordingly.

By planning ahead, you will feel well-equipped and prepared to tackle your social media.  With this content calendar completed, you will be able to schedule your posts on most platforms as far out in advance as you see fit.  For instance, Twitter and Facebook allow you to schedule your posts so that they will post automatically for the time slot that you have chosen.  Unfortunately, you cannot do this with Instagram, but you will still be able to look to your content calendar to see what should be posted instead of coming up with it on the spot.  If you schedule your posts and then let another person on your team know, they will be able to go and review all of the posts to ensure that your grammar, punctuation, and message are all up to your standards.  This will also give you the opportunity to give more time to other tasks when you can go days without having to schedule your social posts.

Without a content calendar, you are limiting your social media potential.  You are also missing out on other opportunities because you are spending more time than necessary on your social media posts.  So, if you want to be known and well-respected in the world of social media, a content calendar is the key.
