The Importance of the Inbound Certification

Posted by Caroline Thompson on Apr 18, 2016 8:00:00 AM

What the heck is inbound marketing? This is exactly what I thought to myself as I started researching Verge Pipe Media for a potential interview. I learned the basic definition and thought I knew exactly what it was so I could be prepared. After I (obviously) nailed my interview, the first thing they told me was that I had to pass the Hubspot Inbound Certification. No clue what that was. But I figured it was probably going to teach me things I already knew about social media. I was wrong. The information I learned from the Inbound Certification made me 10x more prepared for my first day of work at Verge Pipe Media and I guarantee it will make me more prepared for my future career after graduation.

In case you don’t believe me yet, I listed some reasons below why the Inbound Certification is so important.

 1) Learn the Inbound Methodology

I don’t care if you think you know everything there is to know about Inbound Marketing, there is always room for improvement. If you are working at an Inbound Marketing agency, knowing the official terms and bullet points of the methodology will help you explain it to and impress clients in the future. After working at Verge Pipe Media, I will no longer look at ads the same way. I now understand what the company is trying to do and why the ads are posted when they are. When I do a google search and find what I'm looking for right away, I realize that the company that just helped me is definitely using Inbound. So if you're not, you should probably make some changes.

 2) Stay up to date on the latest marketing techniques

I realized that my Inbound Certification only lasts for a year, and at first, I wasn’t very happy. I wanted something I could leave on my resume and LinkedIn page forever. But it isn’t a one and done type of deal. New concepts and ideas are being introduced daily, and there is no way the concepts that the certification teaches now will be the same in 2-3 years. The world of Inbound Marketing is constantly changing. If you get behind, it means your company is getting behind. If recent history has taught us anything, it is that companies cannot be afraid of change or they will not be a company for much longer.

 3) Be more qualified

Not only do I feel more qualified for the job of Community Manager that I have now, but I also feel more qualified for jobs I will apply to in the future. I have something that most graduating seniors do not. I have experience working for an amazing agency, and I have the Inbound Certification. So whether you are starting your own company, or you are just an intern like me, I highly recommend taking (and passing) the Inbound Certification.
