The Ultimate Higher Ed Cheat Sheet on Instagram

In today's world, social media is everywhere. Without it, your company, business or school is falling behind. One of the most popular social media outlets is Instagram, an app used mainly for sharing pictures with your followers.

However, Instagram is not just for pictures of you hanging out with your friends. Colleges and Universities can use the app to attract more applicants, keep alumni up to speed and inform the student body of current happenings.

If you feel like your school could break into the Instagram scene but are unsure where to start, here is a cheat sheet that will help you dive right in to using Instagram for higher education.

1. Showcase and promote your campus.

Your campus is probably beautiful, so why not show it off? Use Instagram to take pictures of your campus and community and share with the world. This will help applicants get a better idea for the feel of the surroundings, as well as remind students how lucky they are to be there.

2. Use "throwback Thursday"

Include alumni by sharing a picture from the past and captioning it with "tbt." This will get alumni excited because it will remind them of all the good memories and things they learned at the school, while also giving students and applicants a little insight to the campus' history.

3. Promote public speakers and events

If your school is hosting someone for a special event on campus, post about it! Time for that annual school tradition? Instagram it. Everyone wants to know what is going on in their community, and nothing will engage students and alumni more than being reminded of all the exciting happenings. This will also engage applicants, as they will get a feel for the kinds of events and traditions the school holds.

4. Celebrate.

Show the world on Instagram how your school celebrates holidays. Are people giving out Valentines by the library? Post about it! Potential students will love to see how festive your college or university gets, and students will probably want to know what is going on and head over that way.

5. Post about students.

Including students in your posts will make them feel special, which in turn will earn you more followers and more likes. Post pictures of students doing their every day thing. If a student receives an honor, post about it and congratulate them! A student wants to feel at home at college or university, and this touch of personalization will show them how caring your school is. This will also show potential students that your school honors its students, and will make them feel more comofrtable in their decision to apply.

In conclusion, Instagram can be a handy tool when it comes to using social media to engage applicants, students and alumni. If you follow this quick guide, you will be gaining more followers and getting more likes in no time! Not to mention, you will make the students and alumni feel a lot more loved and honored to be a part of your campus' community.
