The Queen. Sasha Fierce. Beyoncé. No matter what name you refer to her as, it’s pretty obvious that Beyoncé is at the top of her game, and has been for quite some time. Believe it or not, many of Beyoncé’s strategies are applicable to the business world. When it comes to publicity, there are some things that we can learn from Queen Bey:
- You must stay relevant - The public’s interest in celebrities cycles about as often as Justin Bieber causes controversy (Who? Exactly). Beyoncé has achieved the amazing feat of staying relevant and well-liked in a world where a celebrity can go overnight from being considered the innocent girl-next-door to a self-obsessed, catty songwriter (Lookin’ at you, T-Swift…). Just like the celebrity world is cut-throat, so is the business world. To stay ahead, consider your company to be like Beyoncé. Keep your content and social media links interesting and up-to-date. In order to stay relevant and popular, your information needs to be fresh and compelling.
- Always address issues directly - In the weeks leading up to the 2014 VMAs, the tabloids were obsessing over the “inevitable” divorce of Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Instead of ignoring these rumors, the power couple made a statement onstage after Queen Bey’s performance. The pair, who often refrain from PDA, shared an on-stage kiss while Jay-Z carried the duo’s daughter, Blue Ivy. This alone was enough to silence all speculations of separation. As a PR pro, you should take the same steps and always address comments about your company head on, whether they are negative or positive. By taking this proactive approach, you’ll have happier customers and fewer headaches.
- Keep in touch with your customers’ interests - Over the course of the past couple of years, the stigma attached to the word “feminist” has begun to ebb away. Beyoncé, whose fans tend to identify as feminists, quickly embraced this movement, not just becoming a supporter in name, but incorporating elements of feminism into her work and concerts. The same technique applies to your company. You must consistently stay aware of what your clients are thinking and be sure to demonstrate that your company’s values line up with theirs. Listen to your customers and stay tuned in to what they are saying.
- Be as flawless as possible - When you ask someone to describe Beyoncé, chances are they’ll tell you one word: flawless. She’s earned this title by being amazing at all of her endeavors and by having many talents. Just how Beyoncé does everything excellently (i.e. singing, dancing, acting and probably saving kittens from trees in her spare time), so must your company. All of your content, strategies, social media and other practices must be as close to perfection as possible. This will build up credibility with your clients and earn their respect.
